Subjects:
READING: Our reading textbook is designed to finish a story every 5 days. On Monday, we will build story background, discuss our main reading skill for the week, and go over story vocabulary. On Tuesday we will read the story aloud in class and discuss it. Wednesday is used to work on various reading skills. Thursday, we will review skills again, finish our study guide, and do any worksheet pages. Friday is the lesson assessment. Students will have a study guide to help them review for the test. Throughout the year, we will focus on becoming more fluent readers. We will learn about character's traits and motivation, drawing conclusions, making judgments, fact/opinion, figurative language, and various types of literature genre.
ENGLISH: We will use a textbook and workbook to discuss the 4 types of sentences, and how to punctuate a sentence. We will learn about the subject and predicates of sentences. We will learn about nouns and how to recognize proper nouns and capitalize them. We will learn about singular and plural possessive nouns. We will also learn about verbs and verb tenses.
SPELLING: The spelling workbook is from the same company as our reading textbook. Each lesson has a 20 word list. Every 5th lesson is a review lesson. We will follow a 5 day format. On Monday, we will write our words 3 times each and discuss the meanings of the list words. Students should also complete the first page of the spelling workbook. On Tuesday, students should complete the 2nd & 3rd pages of the spelling workbook. On Thursday, the workbook pages should be ready to be handed in. We will also take a Trial Test. Students missing 0-1 words are exempt from the final. Students will write the words missed 10 times each for practice. Friday is the Final TEST.
MATH: Our school has currently adopted the SAXON Math Book. It is very good as it continually reviews concepts from previous lessons. It is designed so that every 5 days there is a test. I give a pre-test to the students first. We go over it in class and the students can then take the pre-test home to use as a study guide for the actual test. The pre-test and test will follow the exact same format, just different questions. A big emphasis is placed on learning math facts (especially multiplication). Students will learn about perimeter and area, lines, segments, and different types of angles. They will learn about decimals, fractions, percents, elapsed time, polygons, multiplying by 2 and 3 digits, long division, and much, much more. Each daily lesson is made up of 30 questions, and I will pre-check each student's daily work. I will highlight any questions that the student has missed so that the student may go back and make corrections. Students should take home their math work if they are not finished or if they need additional help with corrections.
SOCIAL STUDIES: The social studies text is focused on the regions of the United States. Two chapters are devoted to each region. The first chapter is about the region's geography. The second chapter is focused on people and historical events of the region. Each chapter has approximately 4 lessons. At the beginning of each chapter, students will be given a study guide that we will fill out in class together as we read and discuss each section.
SCIENCE: In science we will learn about plants, animals, rocks and minerals, the water cycle, the solar system, and weather. At the beginning of each chapter students will be given a study guide that we will fill out in class as we read and discuss each lesson. The study guide will help the students prepare for the quizzes and tests.
