The teacher:
My name is Terri Helm and this is my 34th year of teaching at Bluford Grade School. I started out teaching students with Learning Disabilities and I still use much of that information to help all learners in my classroom. I then taught 7th grade (plus one year of 8th grade) Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies 9for about 13 years. I have now been in 4th grade for 9 years and I really enjoy the students and subject matter.
I have been married to my husband, Travis, for 33 years. We have 3 children, Jade (and husband, Matt), Devin (and husband, Cody), and Jaxon, age 19. I also have 3 grandchildren, Rhett (8), Aubrey (4), and Jerritt (1).
I enjoy taking pictures of my family, planting flowers in the spring, and my new passion is working out at the gym. And I LOVE to read! My family & I love visiting Branson, MO, and the Great Smoky Mountains, in Tennessee.
In my classroom, I expect students to work hard, but I like for them to have FUN as well. We will do projects throughout the year to help with learning. I will give the students study guides to help them prepare for the quizzes and tests.
We will take several field trips throughout the year to enhance what we are learning in the classroom. In the past we have taken field trips to the C.E. Brehm Library, the Cedarhurst Center for the Performing Arts, the Jefferson County Historical Village, and Springfield, IL. The trip to Springfield is our "big" end-of-the-year trip and we visit Abraham Lincoln's Home, Lincoln's Tomb, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.
One other thing that I am proud of is that every other year I co-chaperone a trip for 7th and 8th graders to Washington, DC. This is a 3-day trip that takes place over the weekend. I have had the pleasure of taking over 150 local students and over 50 adults to visit our nation's capital. Each time I visit the monuments, Arlington National Cemetery, George Washington's home, the museums . . . I am once again filled with pride for the historical sacrifices that have made our country great.
